The plot of this kajkavian satirical comedy is set in the village of Intestine (Črevo) with a Rural Committee which meets once a year in order to bring important decisions for the community. It is a comedy about general social issues related to the exercise of power. In a small rural community like Intestine this general social issue assumes elements of satire and comedy, as often happens in real life.
The specificity of Kerekeš’s “Assembly” is the presence of Roma minority representatives.
In these facetiously dark times of seizure, subtraction and harnessing of power to talk about authority as a great force, or about premeditated governance, I believe you would agree, it would be ridiculous. Attempts of marginal figures to reign in our society are not something new. They become something traditionally constant and the saddest thing is that there is the general belief that they are all omnipotent. To consider this caricature of society with some decency is unnecessary, and that’s why the Assembly has the most serious intent to present to the viewer its own social marginal circus as the circus of authorities. (Ljubomir Kerekeš)
The show was premiered on the 13th of January 2005. in the Croatian National Theatre in Varaždin and has not left the repertoire since then.
On the 3rd Gumbekov’s days (Gumbekovi dani) -Histrioni Zagreb, the”Assembly” won the award for the best play of the festival, and Ljubomir Kerekeš for the best actor of the festival.
