Subject: 15th International Festival of the Chamber Theatre “Golden Lion“ 2014
Letter of support
The International Festival of the Chamber Theatre “Golden Lion” has become an outstanding point in the cultural map of Croatia. In July Umag becomes the intersection of the Croatian and wider area cultural elites, which love the city’s rich history and culture, the city where the Mediterranean and Mitteleurope meet and mutually interconnect. This unique atmosphere can be felt, seen and experienced in Umag, especially during the International Festival of the Chamber Theatre “Golden Lion”, which this year celebrates its fifteenth edition. A Festival, which carefully selects the topics and opens questions about the social values through a variety of theatrical poetics that arise from the Mediterranean middleeuropean cultural area. The project by Damir Zlatar Frey brings intriguing performances, and is specific for its multilingualism that best reflects the city, which has always been open to dialogue among cultures. Recognizing this value, the town of Umag has declared in its Statute, the International Festival of the Chamber Theatre “Golden Lion”: manifestation of municipal importance.
During the festival days, Umag becomes a cosmopolitan center and takes on a new dimension for the presence of eminent theater artists. The local people and their guests have the opportunity to enjoy the maestro theater performances in which language barriers disappear. In the past 14 years, Umag has hosted prestigious theaters and multi-award winning artists who introduced the audience to their major achievements.
The performances, listed in the official program, will compete for the Grand Prix, which is awarded by a jury of renowned cultural and theater workers.
The festival echoes through the town center which becomes an unique stage thanks to numerous street artists and performers.
The media coverageis very important. The Festival is accompanied by the most important Croatian and regional media. News about the Festival and accompanying events are reported by the central television and radio news programs, newspapers and electronic media. The “Golden Lion” captures the attention of the media for the famous names of the Croatian and foreign artists who visit Umag during these days.
All this can be experienced only in Umag, so I invite all friends of Umag and true lovers of theater to support the 15th Festival of the Chamber Theater.

Author: Zvonimir Peranić,
In a time of rapid and constant changes, with less focus on ones own, in a time of life as a show, imposed values, programmed patterns of behavior, in a time of acceleration, constant striving to higher levels, mortality appears to be more inconspicuous. Life runs quickly. Our personal values, the reasons for living, the importance of existence, of friends, love, attention … is postponed. The search for the lost time in many cases never starts. Some people, before even opening their eyes, close them forever. The neoliberal ideas seem scary, the consumerism, the “libertarian” upstarts: reality shows, the exposure of ones personality through social networks, unnatural modeling and fashion forming of people, formatting television programs, political dulling …. All this makes poor, dries, drips, neutralize and petrify the essence of life. And art, as the theater, in quite a few cases, is connected to this trend. The field of muses sometimes seems false, and instead of a transformational effect on a man which can inspire the theatre catharsis, the stage presents uninventive repetitionar performances.
The persistence of such forced change is extremely difficult. The International Chamber Theatre Festival Golden Lion survives in such transitional time. The fifteenth jubilee edition, is facing a time in which the extremes are especially evident. The Golden Lion has in its base, a permeated idea of the Triangulum – coexistence of three nationalities who live along the border: Croatian, Slovenian and Italian. Just the idea of tolerance, which is chronically lacking in this field, and which is very present in Istria, opposes the idea of extremes. Extremes that nowadays are still present in the transit area. The festival always avoids limits. The Festival programming by Damir Zlatar Frey is open to different forms of professional chamber theatre_ from a chamber scene of large theaters to noninstitutional theater groups and experimental theater formation. It is open to different theatrical forms, from folk to artistic theaters. Such programming may seem extreme at these times, and not only the theater, but the festivals themselves, be it on their financing or production of the plays, they tend more to monochromatic forms, common interests, and just reflect the extremes of the environment, instead of making a critical questioning. The performances of the fifteenth edition highlight these extremes, speak about them, indicate, scream about the human alienation, loneliness of a man lost in a polygon stretched by social, religious, gender, national, educational extremes that are flooding today’s life, which, as a shadow with its darkness, blur the apparently created sense of freedom, and actually isolate, numb and turn them into puppets. The program will therefore face the audience with the everyday life of extremes and try to boost their search. Search, in which the theater can help to avoid losing of time, and focus on enjoying the beauty of life.

The International Festival of the Chamber Theatre “Golden Lion” is one of the most important theater events in the recent Croatian history, of particular importance to the Istrian County and the City of Umag. Arisen from the tradition that began with Coslovich Antonio, founder of the first theater in Umag in the nineteenth century, the spirit of the chamber theater expression in Umag lives through many generations of its residents and their guests.
Since its inception in 2000, the festival has been designed as a meeting place of top artistic achievements of the recent Croatian and foreign theatrical expression, carefully nurturing multiculturalism and multilingualism that are tightly woven into the reality of life of the inhabitants of Istria and Umag. Through a carefully thought-out concept, as well as a rigorous evaluation of a selective choice of programs, the Festival has contextualized over the years within the broaders of the artistic space of the Croatian theatrical reality, becoming its significant part. With its important share in the national, regional, and international theater scene, it continuously opens the way to an artistic and interpersonal dialogue. Systematic questioning and experimenting with theatrical poetics that accompany the chamber festival atmosphere and its always innovative actors’ access, confirm from year to year, but also develop, its own artistic signature.
The festival is from its very beginning, a meeting place for artists, lovers of theater, who can witness, during that one week, the best professional chamber theatre performances, present themselves to each other, exchange their experiences and participate in many inspiring debates, which always contribute to the development of new and diverse aesthetics of theater arts. The competitive nature of the festival gives an opportunity to highlight some of the best ones among the best at all, and to be rewarded for their dedicated work. Due to the exceptional quality of the Festival, it attracts more audience each year, which confirms its excellence and the status of an unavoidable change in the Croatian culture. Therefore, I wish a lot of artistic inspiration and successful moments to this year’s International Festival of Chamber Theatre “Golden Lion”.

The International Festival of Chamber Theatre “Golden Lion” is one of those events to which the Istria County gives exceptional attention because of its importance in the contribution to the promotion and reputation of our region, especially because the festival contributes to the affirmation of young authors promoting new theater troupes. Additionally, its role is very important as part of a tourist offer, because during the summer, it becomes a must destination for lovers of the theater arts.
In over fifteen years, the Festival has become a symbol of quality, recognized not only in Umag, but also in the whole region of Istria; each time it attracts more and more people from the public and cultural world as well as the mass media. The Festival gives additional importance due to its policy of coexistence of three people present in this region – Croats, Slovenes and Italians – on the basis of which it was created, and which forms a specific theater multiculturalism. And as Istria itself, this event is the intersection of culture equality, the culture connected by its diversity.
Although the theater and culture in general, is nowadays faced with many obstacles and challenges, the “Golden Lion’s” motivation and will is not lacking, as evidenced by the following impressive numbers: it has hosted 150 theaters from 20 countries, 500 productions and has assigned 75 awards to prestigious theater artists. For this year’s edition, new events have been prepared, such as an extension of performing to Novigrad and Buje, as well as programs for the youngest theater lovers, the children.
There is no doubt that the “Golden Lion” will grow even more in the yearsahead, for the delight of all of us. The Istria County are very proud of this event, and we will, as usual, support you at all levels. With the belief that you will, as many times earlier, find the strength to keep a high level of organization, programming and execution of the performances, the organizers congratulate the eve of the 15th jubilee of the International Festival of Chamber Theatre “Golden Lion”. We wish good fun to the audience, and lot of luck to the theater troupes.

Once upon a time there was a prince who wanted to find his princess and fall in love. He didn’t know which was the right one, so he went on a journey over his kingdom in order to find her. His servants prepared his luggage and he left.
He looked all over the kingdom, met many countesses and princesses, but he didn’t like none of them. So he returned home sad and lonely.
One night, during a big storm, someone knocked at the door of the castle. The servants opened the door and saw a girl, wet through, who said she was a princess. They let her in, and lodged in the castle. The prince’s mother, having heard that she was a princess, decided to test her in order to check her royal origins. Under a thick layer of bedding, with the help of the servants, she set a little pea, thinking that a real princess should feel it. The next morning, the queen asked the princess how had she slept, and the princess complained that she had not slept at all because it was uncomfortable and thereby confirmed to the king and the queen that she was a real princess.
The wedding lasted seven days and the prince and princess lived happily ever after.
The end .

In 1974, an Italian film director Liliana Cavani made a controversial film Il portiere di notte (The Night Porter). Ex-Sturmbannführer Max and ex-prisoner Lucia, a wife of the renowned conductor, coincidentally meet after thirteen years at Hotel Opera in Vienna. »The Vienna story« would have been quite different if the executioner and his victim had not established a kind of masochistic addiction. How could this be possible? Cavani explains that the human nature is much more complex than imagination, therefore the »love story« between the master and his slave is not impossible. Why is Lucia ready to break her marriage because of the »Nazi swine«, and why is Max, who wants to flee from justice, ready to stand in front of the firing wall of his free will? With her decision, Lucia shows that she is not a saint that she has – in a labyrinth and/or laboratory of darkness, fear and horror – been transformed from an angel girl into a woman familiar with the devilish attraction of dark streets, where the unconscious desires yell for realization and materialization. A distorted balance, where black is no more black and white no more white, places a spectator into an uncomfortable presence. As long as the torturers are the »bad guys« and the victims »heroes«, we look at the executioners with disgust while we sympathize with the victims. Nevertheless, when boundaries are blurred and even the heroes cross the fields of the morally and ethically integral classifications, the firm ground under the feet is suddenly displaced. Max and Lucia agree to act »the performance« in a theatre of cruelty. In their relationship they do not talk much or they do not talk at all – their mutual experience of the past talks instead of them. They communicate with eyes and gestures.
The author of the Maribor production is the renowned Romanian theatre director Nona Ciobanu.

The Vibration is composed of four acts (Euclid, Einstein, Fractals, Quantum) and an epilogue (Strings). Each part has its own basical geometry, each geometry is a demonstration of some physics, and each physics generates its philosophy, the way we see our society, the world we live in, with all its parts. Consequently the art. The string theory in recent times indicates that each elementary particle (which the matter consists of) is in fact a different vibration, a different oscillation of the same fundamental string.
The Elements – geometry intended as a science of space, written in 13 books. The geometry has reached a remarkable level at about 300 BC and has become dominant in mathematics.
The Elements has for centuries been considered the most sophisticated mathematical work. The Newtonian mechanics contains this underlying geometry aspect.
With the establishing of new physics, new geometry develops. The Theory of relativity stated the possibility of torsion of the perception space – time.
The theory of deterministic chaos, as a new geometry of nature, is presented by fractals, while quantum physics reveals multidimensionality. Consequently, changing the nature and philosophy of relativity, then the chaotic regimes, for example, equates the anatomy of the body and of the nature, regimes of heart function… until the Schrödinger’s cat introduces some new logic, the existence of parallel universes and realities.
The strict geometric structure deriving from the Elements, is fractal to Aristotelian poetics of theater creating, his organics, which then connect with the philosophy of the quantum physics. Not only the objects are self-similar, but also the realities are self-similar, the events, societies, and the altering the perception creates a superframe.
In this sense (and only in this) the Vibration considers the artworks as possible realities. So authors and their works are selected as a synergistic fusion of potential elements of (parallel) realities. For example, the Tragic scene of Sebastian Serlia, or the reflections of Robert Wilson, Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, Maurits Cornelis Escher. In the same way Matoš, Marinković and Nušić are integrated. Everything happens with the projections and 3D mapping, in which the light design is performed without a single reflector, completely erased, the blankness with a minimal appearance of a body (with no characterization) in the area that is part of the audience. For example, two-dimensional lines become surfaces, dots transform in bodies, and the walls in a new expanse of reality. This dramaturgical intervention becomes the primary means of “mapping” of other structures. By creating spatial and set design elements, a space of illusion is constructed, in which the viewer is offered, in a reducted way, a range of perceptual realities. According to the latest physical theories, perhaps the entire universe is a hologram! However, at the very end, when everything ends, the space remains empty. The Euclid’s one, as most of us perceive it ? Or the quantum emptiness, full of quantum foam, full of creation and annihilation of particles and antiparticles, full of conversion of energy into mass and vice versa? Is the purification from limitations sufficient for the Heaven? Or for the Hell?.. Because everything already known is just a part of different vibrations of the same equal strings…
